Tony de los Reyes – Grand Bouquet Avec Tournesol

This is my favorite Tony de los Reyes painting; from his blue and white alkyd enamel series, 2004.

I recently learned Billy Howard at Howard House has a blue and white alkyd Tony de los Reyes in his ‘resale’ section of his website. Call or email him if you’re interested in the painting below.

Niessing – What is Contemporary?

Niessing jewelry designs are modern and timeless. According to Niessing, “each piece embodies a simple idea.” Visit their online shop to discover more jewelry.

Niessing Plisse

One of my favorite Niessing ring designs: Plissé, shown in platinum. Although the ring looks heavy because of the creases and folds, it is actually very light. $2983

Niessing Volume 12 Iris

Volume 12 Iris. Niessing created a process where gold and platinum are fused together creating a seamless transition. The result is a beautiful gradient. The exterior of the ring is flat but the interior features a convex surface which allows a slight view underneath the rim of the ring when worn. This is a simple but powerful effect. $3552 I really like the Volume 12 in platinum; it’s a heavy ring but feels great on your finger.

Niessing Signum

Signum in Gold and Platinum. Engraved words are veiled over with a layer of gold or platinum. $3141

New: Niessing Polymer necklace.

BDDW Handmade American Furniture

The BDDW website showcases the minimalist designs from this small American furniture company located in Williamsburg Brooklyn. The web design incorporates liberal white space; leaving plenty of breathing room for the artfully designed objects. The focus is definitely on the work. Here are some of my favorite pieces from their site.

BDDW Mason Writing Desk and Ladder Chair

Left: Mason Desk in American white oak bleached finish, Ladder Chair in American black walnut with hand rubbed dark oil finish. Right: Mason Desk in Osage Orange, Ladder Chair in American black walnut with hand rubbed dark oil finish.

I really like the Mason Writing Desk and Ladder Chair. I contacted the studio and learned the desk is no longer made in the Osage Orange wood option.

Tripod Lamp. Hand carved and turned Claro walnut. Hand rubbed oil finish. Polished Nickel. 60 watt maximum bulb. Required 2 bulbs.

Left: Simple Mirror: American black walnut. Hand rubbed dark oil finish. Right: Captain’s Mirror: Distressed leather frame lined with wood, cast bronze hanging puck.

The chunky section of American Black Walnut used on the simple mirror would be gorgeous.

Anthony Lister – God has a Plan to Kill Me

Lister continues to crank out the work. New exhibition at K Gallery titled “God has a Plan to Kill Me”, in Legnano Italy. From the images at his site it looks like he subdued a few super heros for the opening. Here are some images from that show.

Tie up a princess

Not so super now, uhu!

Mistress of insomnia

TK421 as a hero

He has an upcoming show at New Image Gallery titled “Quit Your Sobbing and Call Me in the Afternoon”. April 26 – May 31, 2008.

Here’s some work from his official site.

Tobias Grau – Bill Table Light

I recently bought this Bill 60w Table Light for use in my office; my prior table light was a Tizio by Artemide.

Tobias Grau Bill Table Light

Having the on/off switch on the handle is a nice detail as it allows you to easily turn the lamp on in darker conditions. The base is ridiculously heavy and has an ample diameter. No fears about the light going anywhere! $362

Tobias Grau Jane

I like the Jane Lamp for a writing desk. The on/off button in Wenge is a nice touch and I prefer the cord in brown.

Cy Twombly Three studies from the Temeraire

One of my favorite paintings from a recent visit to the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Cy Twombly, Three studies from the Temeraire. Twombly’s experience and maturity is clearly evident in these paintings.

Mint London

I used to live around the corner from the interior design store Mint located at 70 Wigmore St. It was always exciting to stop in and find inspiration from Lina Kanafani’s amazing interiors store. Mint consistently shows the unexpected like hand made ceramics, flocked wallpaper (I saw an amazing white flocked roccoco style frame last time I was there), furniture, lighting and textiles with many designs exclusive to Mint.

Maarten Baas Chair

19th century chair re-designed by Maarten Baas. Five designs specially commissioned by Kanafani. Each chair is burned then covered in clear epoxy.

Mint Glasses

Tazza cup and saucer. Mouth blown boron silicated murano glass.

Bergere Sofa

Bergere Sofa. Antique hand-dyed linen with wrapped legs.

A fully comprehensive interior design consultation service is offered from Mint. Contact the store for more details.

IF is the only frame builder shotpeening their titanium frames. What does shotpeening do for your frame? The process imparts residual compressive stress which counteracts the tensile stresses created in the cutting and welding processes. The result: fatigue strength doubles.

Silver IF head tube badge. Also available in solid gold. $2000

Razor sharp transitions between paint colors.

IF can paint your bike any color you want, in any design you can think of. Check out their site to see custom paint jobs galore. Submit your own design or work with them on a collaboration.

Cheap Monday in Bondi

Once you’ve seen that logo, I doubt you’ll ever forget the brand.

Check out the Cheap Monday site for a myriad of jeans and tops designs — sooo many jeans so little time! I recently shopped in their store at 15 O’Brien St, Bondi Beach, NSW 2026. I made a purchase and joined Satan’s Army.

Maharishi Spring Summer 2008

Hardy Blechman launches Maharishi SS 2008 online. The new designs follow through on Maharishi’s respected reputation for not conforming to mainstream fashion trends. From the look of it there is less FOREST DPM: BONSAI used, an emphasis on sewn details and extensive embroidery.

Maharishi umbrella

Currently my favorite Maharishi accessory. Black Maharishi House Pattern Bonsai Forest DPM umbrella. I get to use it 10 months out of the year here in Seattle.

If you ever get the chance, visit the Maharishi retail store at 19 Floral Street, Covent Garden, London. Their website has a cross-section of their line — there are many additional styles available in the shop!

Jill Platner – Palmeira Silver Bracelet

You can now order directly from the Jill Platner website. This is one of my favorite Jill Platner designs: Palmeira in black. $775

Jill Platner Palmeira.

Christopher Wool – My House III

Christopher Wool has a complete cross-section of work in the images section at his official artist website here. His latest works are large canvases with solid black lines in enamel which he scrubs over while wet, leaving a trace of the line exposed underneath. Sometimes lines are repainted while the canvas is still wet producing evocative drips. Some of these paintings have a hurried, graffiti tone. These paintings are great to look at.

My House III, Edition of 100
Silkscreen in 7 colours, printed on 335 gsm matt custom art paper.
Signed, numbered and dated by the artist.
102 x 76 cm (40 x 30 in)

My House III is a silkscreen print that remakes the original text painting Wool made from the 90s. I really like how the registration is altered on each color plate. Produced by Brand X Editions, New York City. According to their website, My House I is still available at Counter Editions.

Resolute lighting – The Clouds

Resolute lighting features clean lines and fastidious details. Their fixtures are designed and manufactured in Seattle. They have a showroom for designers and customers located downtown; stop in and get inspired for your next project.

Resolute Cloud 2 pendant

One of my favorites (it’s hard to choose because there are so many great designs) is the “quietly elegant” Cloud 2 pendant.

Books from Australia, Round One

I just got back from Australia where I purchased a number of books. Shipping costs to USA are very expensive so whenever I head down under I like to buy a number of titles and ship them back with me in my checked luggage. Some (probably most?) of these are likely available online. I prefer to buy books soon after I see something inspirational at a gallery, read about a new exhibition in a magazine/newspaper or dine at a restaurant.

John Olsen

The first title is an oversized book featuring the artwork of John Olsen titled John Olsen: Journeys into the You Beaut Country by Jenny Zimmer and Ken McGregor.

Pier

I picked up this title at a bookstore in Ballarat: Pier by Greg Doyle, Grant King and Katrina Kanetani. Pier is arestaurant located in Sydney. I ate here recently and it was definitely one of the best meals I’ve had in the city. Their approach to seafood is very light and very Sydney. I am looking forward to trying some of the recipes and techniques from the book.

Thai Food

This is a beautiful book all about Thai cooking from David Thompson of Sailor’s Thai: thai food. I ate at theSailor’s Thai canteen — the one with the communal table — great curry.

Matt Moran

Head chef and co-owner of Aria restaurant Matt Moran’s self titled book: Matt Moran. I haven’t eaten at Aria yet however I’ve read nothing but good things about the place. Maybe on my next trip to Sydney!

Maurizio Terzini

Maurizio Terzini has a number of restaurants to his credit in Sydney … this is his book titled Something Italian. I bought this after a meal at Icebergs in Bondi.

Brett Whiteley

While at the Art Gallery of New South Wales I bought this book: Brett Whiteley Art & Life.

I have more books to post but I’ll save those for another entry (or two!).

Pieter Stockmans in Blue and White

Belgian ceramic artist Piet Stockmans creates fine porcelain objects in white and blue. The vast majority of his designs feature eggshell thin white porcelain with minimal accents of blue. He recently updated his website, Studio Pieter Stockmans, which includes extensive samples of the studio and art collections.

Pieter Stockmans

The image above features two beakers in white. Stockmans designed these cups for the German jeweler Niessing.

Globules

Stockmans makes a series called globules in which two sizes of beakers and a low bowl are sprinkled with blue dots.

Dinosaur Designs For All Things Resin

Visit Dinosaur Designs for all sorts of objects created in resin. This is one of my favorite shops in The Strand Arcade, Sydney. Yes, the shop is quite tiny, but it’s filled wall to wall and floor to ceiling with amazing creations. Trust me, you’ll need several visits to take it all in. Their website now features an online store that has a sampling of their different lines.
