For some reason I was thinking about a decadent dim sum lunch I enjoyed at Yauatcha ca 2004. Although this was soon after the restaurant opened, the offerings were presented with extreme care. In other words, it felt like the restaurant was in business decades rather than weeks.

Yauatcha chopstick sleeve

There are so many different dim sum plates offered you may have difficulty choosing; call your server to assist. Speaking of choice, there is a plethora of teas available by the pot. I enjoyed a limited Darjeeling after a glorious lunch! Be sure to visit the patisserie on your way out. Lunch for 2 of us was well over $200 … but worth it. Without a doubt, this was one of the best meals I recall having in London.

I posted a story about the graphic identity for Melbourne cafe, Mr Tulk a little while ago. I found some interior shots I had taken on a recent visit.

Great space. Great coffee.

The wispy lines and swirly shapes of the Mr Tulk identity get applied all over the interior walls of the cafe. Graffiti meets wallpaper; there’s always something new for your eye to take in. I like the green fixture – the scale of that light is really unique and unexpected. The look of the light is slightly retro but the color and proportion make it feel modern.

Pick up your drinks at the copper bar.

One of the seating arrangements features a communal bar along the wall and a tall table. Note the exposed bulb fixtures dangling overhead. The spare black lines formed by the cords pick up on the wall treatments.

The main room at Mr Tulk features additional table seating along the wall, a large communal work table with red stools and unique lamps and a tiny table with a couple of brown metal stools in the foreground. Double-height windows saturate the space in natural light. Note the additional future-retro fixture attached to the wall in the upper left of the picture, this one is black. Adding the two steps up makes a nice division to the space.

I just got back from Australia where I purchased a number of books. Shipping costs to USA are very expensive so whenever I head down under I like to buy a number of titles and ship them back with me in my checked luggage. Some (probably most?) of these are likely available online. I prefer to buy books soon after I see something inspirational at a gallery, read about a new exhibition in a magazine/newspaper or dine at a restaurant.

The first title is an oversized book featuring the artwork of John Olsen titled John Olsen: Journeys into the You Beaut Country by Jenny Zimmer and Ken McGregor.

I picked up this title at a bookstore in Ballarat: Pier by Greg Doyle, Grant King and Katrina Kanetani. Pier is arestaurant located in Sydney. I ate here recently and it was definitely one of the best meals I’ve had in the city. Their approach to seafood is very light and very Sydney. I am looking forward to trying some of the recipes and techniques from the book.

This is a beautiful book all about Thai cooking from David Thompson of Sailor’s Thai: thai food. I ate at theSailor’s Thai canteen — the one with the communal table — great curry.

Head chef and co-owner of Aria restaurant Matt Moran’s self titled book: Matt Moran. I haven’t eaten at Aria yet however I’ve read nothing but good things about the place. Maybe on my next trip to Sydney!

Maurizio Terzini has a number of restaurants to his credit in Sydney … this is his book titled Something Italian. I bought this after a meal at Icebergs in Bondi.

While at the Art Gallery of New South Wales I bought this book: Brett Whiteley Art & Life.

I have more books to post but I’ll save those for another entry (or two!).
