Brand New James Cameron

Lovely.

James Cameron worked with Universal Design Studio to create a space of classic institution, referencing aesthetics and colours from 1960’s French spy films and giving it a timeless approach for the circa 1920’s building it sits in.

Desigual Me&You Collection Primavera/Summer09

When I think of Desigual I think of Custo. Of course when I think of Custo I think of Desigual. I can’t help it. This is not a bad thing as each brand is incredibly artistic AND both labels smother their clothes in detail.

I like the logo – yes it’s another helvetica type treatment – however the inverted ’s’ adds just the right amount of irreverent personality. Their website sums it up: Atypical Spanish Wear since 1984.

Each line on this shirt is fantastic.

So many circles …

Great type treatment with paint splatter and a continuation of the Below Summer’s Intense Color theme. Go to Desigual’s website and check out the Campaign Catalog, Video and Catwalk.

Desigual has US stores in San Franciso, Seattle and a few locations in Florida.

I, Wanderer Wishing I was in Southern Hemisphere Right About Now

The Seattle Blizzard v.2008 punished us for the last 2 weeks. For a variety of reasons we’ve postponed our annual sojourn down under until late in 2009. Thinking about the sun and sand at Bondi sounds good right now … which made me think of this great swimsuit brand, Hotel Bondi Swim.

Tanner Krolle Holdall

Last time I was in London I stopped in to visit the Tanner Krolle boutique. Bags and accessories in their trademark colors were elegantly positioned in windows and around the shop. The bags are extremely well made with minimalist detailing. A bag like the Large Holdall would probably last you a lifetime. For me, the hardest part would be deciding on a color.

Brown

Blonde

Red

Black

Cognac

The Top Frame Holdall is handcrafted in traditional English Bridle leather that will develop a beautiful vintage patina due to the natural vegetable tanning processes used. For increased security this bag has an inner zipper pocket, a padlock and luggage tag included. Available in small, medium and large. £995

Dimension: 29.5×60.5×28 cm
Material: English Bridle leather
Lining: Brushed cotton signature lining

Ksubi The Bombed Maché

Retail remixed by Ksubi. Walking by the outside you wouldn’t know it was a shop. No signage. Doesn’t look like a store. Maybe a gallery. Maybe it’s still under construction? Can I go in? Confusing signals. Which is the point. Ksubi manages to create a retail environment that fuses retail rules with no rules. Constructed entirely from cardboard and tape, the stores location is upscale Armadale so it’s quite a contrast to the surrounding shops which include themes and galleries.

Why the 22

About 6 years ago I stopped by Chiodo to see what was new. I was thinking about their classically tailored business shirts mutated with unusual Chiodo design twists. On this trip, one of the shirts stuck out for me – it had a large number 22 on the back. For some reason it didn’t click at the time, and I let it go.

Fast forward to March 2008. I was sauntering down the stairs to Chiodo while thinking about the 22 shirt … it stuck with me for years … I wondered if they would ever create that shirt design again. Poking around the shirt rack, what do I see. A large black numeral 22. I ask for my size. Response: no longer in stock, all they have is a 3.

Panic. Please, not another 6 year wait.

I explain the saga-story to my salesperson. I’m from Seattle, I get to Melbourne once a year. He is really great and asks if I’d like one made. Today. While I wait. Yes please. I’m told to go have lunch, come back and the shirt will be ready. Go eat lunch at Myer food court. Return for shirt. Thanks for the custom shirt Chiodo.

Every time I wear it, people ask me, “Why the 22?”

Malcolm Betts Goldsmith

We visited the gallery of goldsmith Malcolm Betts in 2001. At that time he had just opened his new space on Campden Street. The pristine interior detailing is a nice contrast to the hammered look of his work. Newly updated website with sumptuous up-close images of his jewellry designs.

Chiodo, Reusable Shoppers

The other day I wrote about Chiodo, a menswear shop located in Melbourne. They’ve been doing the reusable shopping-bag-thing for a while. When you make a purchase, they send you out the door with a reusable shopper, handmade with suit/shirt fabric. A nice touch and a great alternative to a paper or plastic bag. I’ve kept all my chiodo-bags from past purchases. Brighter colors were from Spring/Summer season, darker were from Autumn/Winter.
