Tord Boontje Blossom Chandelier for Swarovski Crystals

Designed in 2002, the Tord Boontje Blossom Chandelier created for Swarovski has already become a modern lighting design classic. I think it’s a beautiful creation and summarizes Boontje’s unique vision of the natural world around us. He describes the chandelier as a fusion of nature and the emotional qualities of crystal.

The November 2007 issue of House and Garden magazine wrote a story on Gwyneth Paltrow’s house in the Hamptons. A large Blossom is shown hanging in her dining room. Habitually Chic has a nice story on the photo shoot for the article.

B&B Italia Limited Edition Shelf X

We bought one of the last remaining editions of Naoto Fukasawa’s Shelf X for B&B Italia. We ordered the piece from our Interior Design source in Italy and waited patiently for about 22 weeks.

The limited edition Shelf X design created by Naoto Fukasawa is limited to 300 pieces worldwide.

It took us several hours to de-crate the Shelf and get it into position. Davide at Santiccioli fabricated an excellent container that made the trip from Florence to Seattle. Above the shelf hangs Tony de los Reyes’ The Imago Sea Series no. 12.

We liked the idea of the white corian Shelf X against a white surface so we painted three walls in the room a modern bright white. This color scheme allows rich grey shadows to wander across the wall throughout the day.

Notice how the Shelf appears to float.

On top of the shelf sits a series of 8 beakers by Pieter Stockmans.

Unique spaces are created between the vertical forms. Books can stack flat or stand conventionally with vertical bindings.

There are no visible seams in the piece which gives the impression it’s been cut from a single piece of stone. Although the overall appearance is thin and light, the corian is absolutely rigid and can easily withstand the weight of a collection of books and objects.

Kasthall Rugs

I’ve always been attracted to Kasthall’s amazing rug creations. Here are a number of my favorite styles from their collection. From the hand-tufted series are Fogg and Moss, from their woven rug category, Esther.

Fogg is ‘an elegant pile rug that shimmers in a variety of shades.’ The sheen comes from the 100% linen component used to make the rug. The texture is soft and has a distinct smoothness, despite the depth.

Moss is made of long linen threads and short, coarse wool yarn which makes the rug feel warmer. The contrasting elements of matte wool and shimmering linen strands comes together perfectly.

Esther is from the Woven Rug collection. The bouclé rug is made of a loop yarn that shimmers from the addition of a linen element woven throughout. the mixture of linen and wool in a number of shades creates the unique depth of color and marbled quality.

The About page on Greg Hatton’s website sums it up. “I have been making things for as long as I’ve been able to hit a nail with a hammer.” That’s a great quote.

Shelf X by Naoto Fukasawa for B&B Italia

I like the Shelf X limited edition bookcase designed by Naoto Fukasawa for B&B Italia. The shelf is made from Corian with no visible seems, giving the impression the bookcase has been carved from a single piece of stone/marble. The edges are slightly beveled which draws attention to the thin structure and provides a subtle change in shadow.

I’ve always liked the series of bentwood chairs Frank Gehry designed for Knoll. Each piece incorporates sculptural twists and turns, while maintaining the functional requirements of a chair. What’s amazing to me is that it works. The first time I sat in a Cross Check I thought the joints would pop and the strips would unravel. Not so. These chairs are solid; the entire collection has been well designed and precision built by Knoll.

Roy McMakin at Matthew Marks

Roy McMakin’s has a one-person exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery in New York which features a number of the artist’s sculptures and photographs.

McMakin continues his familiar vernacular of manipulating mundane objects, or pieces of furniture, by tweaking material, scale, proportion and function. The artist has a knack for taking advantage of the mundane in everyday objects; when a furniture archetype gets a McMakin-remix you know it’s going to have a unique personality, with even more quirks.

Martha Sturdy Resin Lamp

Artist, sculptor and designer rolled into one. Martha Sturdy makes housewares, furniture and accessories out of cast resin, brass and steel. A little bit of resin goes a long way; I think its best used sparingly and in combination with other materials.

Robert Kuo Lighting for McGuire

I’ve always been attracted to Robert Kuo’s Cloisonné and Copper Repoussé lamps for McGuire, a series of restrained designs he created several years ago. Each lamp shows a refined character through color, proportion and materials. The artist combines traditional craft techniques and ancient Chinese shapes to make these unique lighting objects.

Gulassa & Company – Custom in Seattle

Gulassa & Company has been in business since 1990 in Seattle providing comprehensive design and fabrication. They work out of a shop in Queen Anne – but don’t knock on their door thinking it’s a showroom – it’s a production facility. Contact your interior designer to see their work in person. This description is from their website: “We are wood workers, metal workers, glass artists, upholsterers, architectural and graphic designers. By collaborating with clients, architects, contractors, and designers, Gulassa & Company is able to successfully resolve the most complex design issues.”

Here are a few of my favorite pieces from their website.

Japanese Stool. Handcrafted from blackened and oxidized steel using an English Wheel

Stitched Table. Bog Oak and blackened steel

Sculpture Base: Short, Blow-Down Oxidized Douglas Fir & Blackened Steel. Also available in Tall, Olive Ceruse Oak & Blackened Steel. A special sculpture or object would look amazing on one of these bases.

Steel Flooring. Each piece is 24″ x 24″ and has 4 countersunk holes w/screws. I’d imagine you could use this system for walls as well. Check that with your architect.

BDDW Handmade American Furniture

The BDDW website showcases the minimalist designs from this small American furniture company located in Williamsburg Brooklyn. The web design incorporates liberal white space; leaving plenty of breathing room for the artfully designed objects. The focus is definitely on the work. Here are some of my favorite pieces from their site.

I really like the Mason Writing Desk and Ladder Chair. I contacted the studio and learned the desk is no longer made in the Osage Orange wood option.

Tripod Lamp. Hand carved and turned Claro walnut. Hand rubbed oil finish. Polished Nickel. 60 watt maximum bulb. Required 2 bulbs.

The chunky section of American Black Walnut used on the simple mirror would be gorgeous.

Mint London

I used to live around the corner from the interior design store Mint located at 70 Wigmore St. It was always exciting to stop in and find inspiration from Lina Kanafani’s amazing interiors store. Mint consistently shows the unexpected like hand made ceramics, flocked wallpaper (I saw an amazing white flocked roccoco style frame last time I was there), furniture, lighting and textiles with many designs exclusive to Mint.

19th century chair re-designed by Maarten Baas. Five designs specially commissioned by Kanafani. Each chair is burned then covered in clear epoxy.

Tazza cup and saucer. Mouth blown boron silicated murano glass.

Bergere Sofa. Antique hand-dyed linen with wrapped legs.
